Is your brake warning light on? That usually indicates one of two things:
1. Your emergency brake is on. Check that first. Release it to turn off the light.
2. You have lost brake pressure in the system.
If you have checked your emergency brake and that is not on, then you should safely pull over and stop. There are a couple reasons your brake pressure could be low:
1. There could be a leak in part of the system making it impossible to hold pressure
2. The hydraulic fluid could be low
In either case, your brake performance will be affected and you should have it repaired before driving it again.
If your car is equipped with antilock brakes you will have a yellow warning light that usually says ABS. If that light is on it indicated that there is a problem with your antilock braking system. The ABS controller will disable the system and your brakes should function as if you don’t have ABS. If this is the case, you can safely drive your vehicle to your mechanic for service.
