Have you been told you need a catalytic converter? Do you know what the catalytic converter in your car does? A catalytic converter is part of the emission system of your vehicle. It uses a catalyst to convert three harmful compounds in your car exhaust into harmless compounds. These three harmful compounds are:
1. Hydrocarbons – in the form of unburned gasoline
2. Carbon monoxide – formed by the combustion of gasoline
3. Nitrogen oxides – created when the heat in the engine forces nitrogen in the air to combine with oxygen.
Carbon monoxide is a poison for any air-breathing animal. Nitrogen oxides lead to smog and acid rain, and hydrocarbons produce smog.
Inside the catalytic converter, the catalyst is in the form of platinum and palladium. It is coated onto a ceramic honeycomb or ceramic beads that are housed in a muffler like package that is attached to the exhaust pipe. This catalyst helps to convert carbon monoxide into carbon dioxide. It converts hydrocarbons into carbon dioxide and water. It also converts the nitrogen oxides back into nitrogen and oxygen.
