This week two cars were towed in because their engine oil was so low that it caused the engines to quit. One was a 2003 Infiniti G35 and the other a 2003 Lincoln Navigator. Both vehicles were so low on oil that their engines quit and would not turn over. We accurately diagnosed the quitting problem and a relatively simple fix was an oil change. What is absolutely amazing is neither vehicle sustained any engine damage which is actually a safe guard the manufacturers installed to protect the engine. A few years before, those engines would not have been so lucky. Checkout this website on Engine Oil Myths!
This same week we had two BMW’s, the same year and model, both came in within an hour of each other because the low oil warning light came on the dash. Each was only a quart low, but the blinking light got their attention before something more serious could have happened to their vehicle.
With newer cars, oil changes are recommended by the manufacturer (depending on the make and model) every 5,000 to 7,000 miles. Our suggestion would be to check your oil in between services. With busy schedules, time slips by and many think what was only a few months turns out to be much, much longer. Checking your oil level and its condition is preventative maintenance in keeping your vehicle reliable.
