Failed Smog Evap System
A customer had taken her 1997 Chevrolet Cavalier for the required smog test for registration and it failed because the check engine light was on. She brought the vehicle to us to have our licensed smog technician repair it.
After performing the computer diagnostic the technician found that there was a code for the evap system, specifically an evap control malfunction. After testing the evap system it was determined that the canister vent valve and the purge solenoid were sticking and not holding vacuum.
After replacing the components the customer was advised that the computer monitors needed to run the checks before attempting the smog retest. It was recommend the customer drive the vehicle approximately 50 miles and return to have the monitors checked. The customer returned a couple days later and it was found the monitors had run and she was able to have her recheck.
