Failed Smog Thermostat
Everyone has heard of failing smog because of a bad oxygen (O2) sensor or a bad catalytic converter. But did you know you could fail smog if your thermostat is malfunctioning? Recently we had a customer bring in her 1996 Saturn SL because it failed smog. Our licensed smog repair technician reviewed the failed smog test paperwork. After road testing the vehicle he determined that the coolant temperature was below specifications. The technician testing the coolant system and found that the thermostat was stuck open and the coolant temperature sensor is leaking coolant into the sensor. His recommendation was to replace the thermostat and coolant temperature sensor. After replacing these components the vehicle passed the retest. Our customer was very happy the repair was not as costly as she feared.
